SKETCHBOOK ARRIVAL - HELLO FUTURE ARCHIVE PROJECT @ ONASISS CULTURAL CENTRE NEXT YEAR

Okay, there are lots of pages to fill here. I was recently invited to take place in the project, to fill up a sketchbook which will become part of the Onasiss Cultural Centre's collection, exhibited with a bunch of other artist sketchbooks. Pretty exciting - I want to explore fragments of photographs, work a little messier than usual (it is a sketchbook after all) I hope to evoke a sense of friction.

Planning to document the work as it develops, will post here soon.

NOISE FESTIVAL WINNER: 'CRADLE' IS ELAINE CONSTANTINE'S CURATOR CHOICE

Noise festival launched at the House of Commons last week. More information about festival events are online

"Decay, decline, death: things we would all rather not have to engage with but which impose themselves on us all in the end - gently summed up in Helen's interior and still life. Most photographers would have overlooked the cobwebs and dead flies for something more obvious."
- Elaine Constantine, 2014

PENUMBRA BOOK FEATURES 'FITTING ROOMS' PROJECT

Join VERB Bureau for the book launch:

Friday 15th August 2014, 6pm - 9pm
A.P.T. Gallery, Deptford

"Following on from our art exhibition Penumbra, which was held in A.P.T. Gallery in Deptford, London in May 2014, this book is an exploration of the themes raised in the show, which stemmed from notions of transitory stages and states of uncertainty, as well as the contemporary issue of the difficultly in obtaining professional and financial stability. The Penumbra publication is a collection of creative and academic texts developing the discussion started in our exhibition further as well as acting as a catalogue of the show. The publication includes texts by: Rachael Smith, Bedwyr Williams, Greta Eacott, Anna Hussey, Lydia Julien, Collette Rayner with Daisy Lafarge, HE. Wiseman, Nella Janiika Aarne, Elizabeth Hudson and Olga Stebleva.

Fitting Rooms was included in Penumbra, an exhibition curated by VERB Bureau earlier this year.

(M)OTHER INSTALLATION AT SHOW RCA 2014

Installation of (M)other at Show RCA 2014. Eight hand-printed C-Type Photographs.

Show RCA 2014 was a great opportunity to experiment with displaying my most recent series of photographs. Through the show, I made a visual relationship between fragments of domestic interiors and cropped sections of female skin. By hanging frames at different heights, this enabled the viewer to have a child-like experience of looking up and down at new surroundings.

(M)other

The work explores an analogy between the body of the Mother, the figure of the 'Monstrous Female' and the interior of a worn English house. Here, photographs of sun-drenched wallpaper and spider webs alongside the visceral surface of the ageing female body become subjects of fascination.  The physical security of home is called into question, where leaking ceilings and darkened corners suggest the embodiment of an un-named or unknowable fear. Imperfections in shadowy vein riddled skin present the maternal body as being at once haunted and as the site of nurture.
In Show RCA a cluster of differently scaled photographs present a labyrinth for the gaze, where ambiguous shadowy interiors are hung amongst images of the overwhelming female body.

PENUMBRA: EXHIBITION PRIVATE VIEW. 1ST MAY, 6PM @ APT GALLERY, DEPTFORD

I'm looking forward to taking part in this group show at APT gallery, VERB are a really great organisation for artist's to get involved with. See below for exhibition details taken from the VERB site:

"Penumbra
n. An area in which something exists to a lesser or uncertain degree. A fringe region of half shadow. An outlying surrounding region; a periphery.

"Penumbra is VERB’s debut art exhibition. This show will present a selection of 11 artistsʼ work that demonstrates the beauty, vitality and contradictions inherent within transitional states. The exhibition will run from 1 May until 18 May 2014 at A.P.T Gallery in Deptford, London, and will be followed by a publication. The public events programme includes tours, artist talks, performances, a panel discussion and curatorial workshops for children.
The artists exhibiting in Penumbra are Megan BroadmeadowAnton BurdakovGreta Eacott,Elizabeth HudsonAnna HusseyLydia JulienHelen McGhieAlex McNameeClare Price,Collette Rayner and YuYu. The show will focus on three strands of liminality: spacial, temporal and transformative. However, as befits a show centered on the ʻin- betweenʼ and the ambiguous, many works bridge the divide between these areas. The pieces offer a good way into considering liminality for those without a background in art theory, as they can be appreciated on an aesthetic, as well as theoretical, level."
